Spendor

Spendor Like so many iconic speaker companies, Spendor might just be the first offspring of the developments and innovations made at the BBC’s sound engineering department. Founded by Spencer and Dorothy Hughes in the 1960s, the company gained recognition by sound engineers worldwide with the BC1 speaker. Though royalties would be paid to the BBC, as Spencer was still employed by them when the BC1 went to the market, this speaker laid the foundation stones.

Today Spendor is led by one of the most prominent figures in the hi-fi industry, Philip Swift, who in the 1980s co-founded Audiolab and made waves with the launch of the highly accomplished and affordable 8000A integrated amplifier. Over the years Swift has continued to guide his companies with the same principles he set out with – to create well-engineered products that offer a high order of sound quality. This guiding principle is evident in every current Spendor speaker, offering exceptional performance at an affordable price.

Spendor is a company who refuses to settle for anything but the best. Unlike a lot of speaker manufacturers, Spendor isn’t happy incorporating pre-made mid/bass drive units from other companies. Instead they design and produce all their mid/bass drive units in house, this way the quality control can be closely monitored. By producing their own drive units, Spendor can ensure that each unit’s designed specifications are matched to its intended speaker cabinet. Again, not happy with how production of their cabinets were being made, Spendor recently created a division in the company responsible for the manufacturing its speaker cabinets and bespoke cabinets for a few other big name speaker manufacturers.

The company has never once sat back and stopped innovating and developing their products; in recent times Spendor rocked the worlds of hi-fi’s critics and consumers when they launched their D7 speaker. The D7 has been awarded a Class A rating by the US based magazine, Stereophile; just to name one of many awards. It’s all about the midrange for Spendor, every speaker they have is developed with astonishing midrange performance, but don’t let this fool you – the high and low frequency performance of their speakers are also top notch.

Appealing to a large customer base, Spendor make a variety of speakers. Their A range is fashioned with a modern tower appeal. While their Classic range is developed off their historic BC1 speaker; thin walled BBC monitor styled speakers. No matter what range of speakers you listen to by Spendor, you are sure to be impressed with their high level of performance.

At the Bristol Sound & Vision Show 2016 Spendor presented to the world two of its latest additions – the D9 and the SP200. The D9 is a supped up version of the multi award winning D7, and the SP200 takes their Classic range to the high-end reference level. Again, Spendor have taken the level of performance to the next level.
